Fishing derbies are a great way to
introduce kids -- and parents -- to angling. (US

My father and grandfather got me started fishing while I was hardly more than
a toddler. I’ve been learning ever since.
Not everyone has a relative or friend who can get them started, but here are
some other ways to learn:
- There are lots of good books on the subject. Check your local public
library.
- Any local fishing specialty shop will probably be glad to give you a
little advice.
- Most states have fishing education programs, specially in April, May and
June.
- The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department offers a "Let's
Go Fishing" program.
- Massachusetts has a very active
Angler Education Program.
- Connecticut has a program called C.A.R.E. (Connecticut
Aquatic Resource Education).
- Vermont has a program of
kids’ fishing derbies. These are a great way to introduce youngsters to
the sport. Parents who don't know much about fishing can also get some
pointers.
Any of these will help you get started in the right direction.
