| In the manufacturing sector, when demand is high, you add extra shifts to your operation to maximize output. Wachusett Mountain is clearly in the business of manufacturing fun and they work at it three shifts, seven days a week.
The morning shift at Wachusett is almost exclusively an adult affair. Lots of retirees show up early to get first tracks on the lovely groomed corduroy. But thereÆs also a fair contingent of just plain folks playing hooky and getting in a few runs. Wachusett is within easy reach of everyone in eastern Massachusetts, all of Rhode Island, and about half of Connecticut. Some folks ski in the morning and go back to work in the afternoon.
When school lets out, Wachusett takes off like a skyrocket. Talk about energy! The place simply vibrates from the moment the first school bus pulls up until the last one leaves. On weekends, of course, Wachusett vibrates from first chair to last.
When the night shift takes over a little later in the evening, the vibe changes to something more mellow -- unless youÆre on the NASTAR hill where the competition is friendly, but often intense. And in the park where throwing down something sick is important.
Personally, I like Wachusett early in the morning on my tele gear, making long turns on the smooth slopes. But I also like the night shift when the mountain feels bigger and more challenging.
In any case, Wachusett is a perfect refuge from the workaday world. ItÆs close to the cities but gives you a real chance to escape to snow and slopes. ThereÆs nothing in the way of steep or scary on Wachusett. ItÆs great place to either warm up for a trip to the bigger hills or wind down from a long work week. |
