| It used to be almost every New England town with a hill had a ski slope. Now these little local gems are rare
-- and worth a visit.áá
If you've got a couple of free hours and a desire to go skiing and are near Lebanon, you'll find you don't need a big mountain to have some fun.
To get a taste of skiing and riding the way it was, (and,
perhaps, the way it should be) try spending an afternoon or
evening at tiny
Storrs
Hill.á Located in downtown Lebanon and owned by the city, the slope is
run mainly by volunteers from the Lebanon Outing Club.
An adult lift ticket will cost you $10. No, that isnÆt a typo. Kids 16 and
under are half that. Who says skiing and riding have to be expensive?
Storrs has 300 feet of vertical and a Poma (platter) lift to get you up it.
Pomas were designed long before snowboards existed, and these lifts present a
challenge to sidewise-riding. But the young boarders at Storrs don't seem to have much of a problem. The main slope has snowmaking and excellent grooming. When thereÆs enough
natural snow, a second trail through the woods is open enough to ski. On
weekends, local kids flock in for cheap lessons with volunteer instructors and
lots of fun.
Decades ago almost every town in the hills of New England and northern New
York had a local slope like this, where kids could learn cheap.
Storrs Hill is only about 10 minutes from the junction of Interstates 89 and
91, so the odds are good you pass it on your way to ski somewhere else. Do
yourself a favor, stop by sometime and see how much fun a family can have for a
few dollars. |
