Once upon a time, Bretton Woods, was seen in the Eastern ski world as a
1,500-ft corduroy cruiserÆs dream; an intermediateÆs paradise of moderate,
consistent pitch, wide open, trails and impeccable snowmaking and grooming, with
a few ho-hum steeps and glades that really wouldnÆt elicit much excitement among
the hard core.
On the one hand that was fine, as Bretton Woods has always touted itself as a
ôfamily mountain. ö
On the other hand, unlike Smugglers Notch -- which has some very serious
terrain hidden away -- Bretton Woods had little to entice families with one or
more good skiers or riders among their numbers.
All that has begun to change in recent years with the opening of the West
Mountain, the expansion onto the Rosebrook Summit with a high speed lift and the
opening of the Rosebrook Canyon Glades.
Suddenly, Bretton Woods has become the place to be for locals on a powder
morning, which is sad for those of us who used to have it to ourselves when it
had a wussy reputation.
By all means visit Bretton Woods if you like deep, soft, perfectly groomed
corduroy. They still have that in abundance. They also have some challenge.
Tell you what: The next time the wind blows or freezes you off Wildcat or
Cannon, sneak over to Bretton Woods and try their trees.
