Mount Sunapee - Newbury, NH - Review

 Mount Sunapee:

Review | Stats | What's New | Weather | Ski Conditions

by Tim Jones, founder and executive editor
A few years ago, when the State of New Hampshire first proposed leasing Sunapee Mountain to the owners of Okemo, I fought the idea tooth and nail.

Boy was I wrong!

Smugglers Notch Ski Area
Since taking over, the Muellers have made so many improvements that the area is simply a pleasure to ski or ride. Sunapee skis like a big mountain.

These folks sure know how to make snow and groom it! And they make enough snow to open almost every trail if Mother nature doesnÆt cooperate.

The trail system on the mountain is varied enough to spread out the crowds that arrive on weekends. On weekdays, you practically have the place to yourself.

If groomed isnÆt your thing, there are a number of natural-snow glades that usually have enough snow to risk your bases. ThereÆs a whole separate mountain for beginners and never-evers.

Lots of folks visit Sunapee on weekends and holidays, but if you get there early, base yourself in the old lodge (left side of the parking lot) and use the triple chair to access the Sunbowl quad, you can usually find short liftlines and uncrowded slopes on most days until late morning.
