The state park campground is midway between Maine's capitol city of Augusta and the popular mid-coast area of Camden and Belfast. Add to that campsites on crystal-clear Lake St. George and a public boat ramp and you have a perfect state park.Except that nothing in life is perfect, including this gem of a park. Its other boundary is State Route 3, a heavily traveled thoroughfare connecting inland central Maine with the coast.
Still, you might be willing to overlook the traffic noise for the chance to hear the nightly calls of the loons, swim in a pristine lake, and try your hand at fishing.
Landlocked salmon and brook trout are among the fish caught in the 1,017 acre lake. If fishing isn't your thing, try paddling around (the park rents canoes and row boats) to one of the many little islands in the lake.
There's a nice swimming beach with a lifeguard on duty in the summer, as well as swings, volleyball, basketball, and a sandpit. The bulk of the park's 380 acres are across the street, including some hiking trails. Watch your kids and pets carefully along lakeside trails. Venture off the trail and you'll find yourself knee-deep in the most vigorous crop of poison ivy I've ever seen. Fortunately, the trails are well-maintained and marked, as are the poison ivy danger zones.
So if you can tune out the road noise, you'll be able to tune into the sounds of nature on a beautiful lake.
